Holding hands is a way to tell everyone who is around you that the person who’s hand you’re holding is yours. It’s a declaration of devotion. Holding hands not only a declaration of devotion, but it also can relieve stress. Benedict Carey wrote an article that explains the benefits of holding hands. He states, “Married women under extreme stress who reach out and hold their husbands' hands feel immediate relief, neuroscientists have found in what they say is the first study of how human touch affects the neural response to threatening situations. The soothing effect of the touch could be seen in scans of areas deep in the brain that are involved in registering emotional and physical alarm.”
So next time you’re out in public think about holding the hand of the one you love, admire, and treasure. You will benefit greatly.
